Hyde Park Elementary hosts Safety Awareness Day Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005
"Keeping Our Kids Safe"
The Dutchess County Sheriff Department's K-9 dogs, a Hyde Park fire truck and Hyde Park's D.A.R.E. squad car were just a few of the exciting attractions kids and parents came to see during HPE's first Safety Awareness Day.
"Keeping Our Kids Safe" was the theme of the event, which also featured a child photo ID and fingerprint station sponsored by the Dutchess County Sheriff's Department. Seventy-two children stopped by to have their photo and fingerprints taken! The HPE S.A.V.E. Committee also distributed information to parents on the many safety procedures in place at school, which all help to Keep Our Kids Safe!

Violet Avenue Presents New Programs for Students and Staff
- Student Mentoring Program
- Student Council
- Multicultural Comittee
Student Mentoring Program - Teachers and teaching assistants volunteer to spend "special time" with a student. Students are referred by staff or parents who might benefit from some additional, loving attention.
Student Council - Students in grades 3-5 work with the principal on community service projects. This year, they are gathering supplies for a family of victims of hurricane Katrina, keeping the neighborhood clean through "adopt-a-highway" behind the school, and starting a school newsletter.
Multicultural Committee and Professional Development - There is an active committee of staff and parents meeting monthly with the principal to talk about issues of race, class and equity at Violet Avenue and in the community. All are welcome. The committee is sponsoring a letter to families regarding holidays and celebrations in an attempt to be respectful to everyone in our community. We are also offering a course called, "Racism and Sexism" at Violet Avenue, through SUNY New Paltz. Participants are from VAS, HMS and FDR.
