It's going to be an exciting educational journey as our third graders spend their final year in our Primary Alternate program.
In the Primary Alternate program we teach around themes. Four afternoons a week the children work with their theme partners to explore and research social studies and science themes based on the Grades 1 - 3 NYS standards. We integrate reading, writing, math, social studies and science. We use art work, poetry, music, theater, science experiments, field trips and the support of our media specialists, art music and physical education teachers to explore our topics.
In third grade we spend a great deal of time teaching the children organizational skills, which not only helps them to achieve success in third grade but also prepares them for life. One organizational tool that will be greatly utilized this year will be the Netherwood Elementary School Student Planner. Your child will use this planner to record daily homework assignments and other important reminders. Please help your child establish the routine of reviewing it each night before he/she begins their homework assignments. Please continue to sign the planner after homework is completed. It should be kept in his/her homework folder and must be brought to school each day. There is also a section for your comments; therefore, please feel free to use it to communicate anything you need to me.
Please know that I am always available if you have any questions and I appreciate your support. I'm looking forward to a rewarding, challenging and exciting year with the children.
Sincerely,
Joan Miller
